6. Brazil 1989 – Mansell wins on Ferrari debut

In 1989, Ferrari had a hot new British driver, Nigel Mansell. At the first race of the year at the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet, everyone was curious to see how he would compare to teammate Gerhard Berger, who had been third overall in 1988. Mansell qualified sixth and later said he was convinced the Ferrari 640 would break down. But it didn’t, and Mansell became the first man since Andretti in 1971 to win for Ferrari on his debut – a feat not repeated until Kimi Raikkonen managed it in 2007.
