3. Monaco 1966

1966 marked not only Formula 1’s 24th official visit to the principality but also a new era for the sport, as 1.5-litre engine regs previously used to great effect by the likes of Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Mercedes were replaced with larger 3-litre units, levelling the playing field and allowing British independents BRM to make a jump on its rivals. In only his second full season of F1 racing, future three-time champion Jackie Stewart held off advances from early leader John Surtees and Lorenzo Bandini’s to take his second victory in an attrition-heavy event that saw just four classified finishers, a record that still stands to this day.

Oh and by the way, Monaco 1966 also marked the debut for a little British outfit called McLaren, who went on to do quite well in the decades that followed…
