The House of Portier race team again proved they are the best in the UAE after winning Round 5 of the Cytech UAE GT Championship at Yas Marina in style. Both the GTA and GTB Corvettes crossed the finish line within seconds of each other and way ahead of their closest competition.

The victory was even sweeter for the team in the top-flight GTA class as a technical issue with the Corvette’s timing transponder during qualifying had seen them demoted to the back of the grid. The driving pairing of Fabien Giroix and Karim Al Azhari had a tough task to contend with as they had the full grid of the UAE GT Championship ahead of them at the start of the race.

However, such issues didn’t prove to be a problem as Fabien Giroix stormed his way through the field in the first lap of the race, before taking the lead prior to the mandatory pit stop and driver changeover. Karim Al Azhari then took over driving duties and continued with a strong performance bringing the car home with a very comfortable lead.

Speaking after collecting his winner’s trophy from the top step of the podium, Karim had this to say of his performance. ‘The build up to the race was a little unexciting for me after the issues we’d had with our transponder in qualifying. I’m lucky to drive for such a strong team with House of Portier and no matter what challenges we are faced, we work together for a great result. The setup of the Corvette was amazing and it allowed us to win this race today at Yas even from the back of the grid!’

In the No 24 GTB Corvette, the young driver pairing of Mohammed Al Mutawaa and Jiri Skula had an excellent race, putting on a great show for the crowds at Yas Marina, finishing 1st in class and 2nd overall.

Mohammed Al Mutawaa was happy with his result. ‘The race went well, I improved my performance during the race in areas on the track that I struggled with during qualifying. I was having trouble with the corkscrew corner yesterday, but today I finally found the best way through to solve that problem. At the end of the race, I pushed as hard as I could and we were able to maintain first place.’

Team Manager for House of Portier / TAM Auto Engineering, Motaz Abu Hijleh, was extremely happy with the day’s result. ‘It was an interesting challenge starting at the back of the grid, but Fabien did an amazing race to pick up positions. Mohammed drove amazingly well in GTB class and managed to create a very nice gap from the beginning of the race until the pit stop. After our pit stop, the MSW Porsche came in with a puncture, so we felt we could reduce our pace a little but still have a comfortable win. It was a nice race and proves the capabilities of the team.’
