Not everyone liked the BMW 6-series when it first appeared on the scene. Yes, no car is adored by everybody. But the BMW 6-series – the company’s first attempt at an executive coupe – had two significant problems.
Firstly, the 6 slotted so neatly between the 5 and 7 grand saloon tourers that many regarded this new addition as a simple case of going through the numbers. Another problem was the 6-series’ main rival: the Aston Martin Vantage. When push came to shove, most people went the 007 route, leaving BMW out in the cold.
Careful notes have obviously been taken in Bavaria. The new 640i Gran Coupe is out early this year, and as these cheeky teasers show, designers have had a few sleepless nights. Gone is the rounded bonnet, ‘raised eyebrow’-esque grooves offering a much more imposing snout. These design tweaks continue along the flanks, tightened side panels shirking even the slightest idea of ‘bulbous’.
Performance has also been sharpened, with the 3.0l engine now producing 315bhp. Expect 0-100kph completed in 5.4 seconds and a 250kph top speed. Twinned with the company car monopoliser – the new 3-series – and with sharper performance and a sleek new design, this new 6-series could launch another successful year for BMW.
