San Luis is a track that could grace any list of ‘World’s Best Tracks’ or similar chaff that always gets shifted onto unfortunate readers’ news feeds at the end of the year. That the FIA GT1 World Championship continued so late, with two rounds in two weeks finishing in December, means that for me at least, there is less chance to write about those tracks (though Interlagos would feature and Navarra would most definitely not).

But there is no doubt that the Argentines have created a classic at Potrereo de Funes. Racing around a lake, set in breathtaking mountainous scenery, it provided a chance to drop our collective jaw at yet more incredible GT1 racing and incredible GT1 racing it was.

“It’s a daunting place, that’s for sure,” commented Peter Dumbreck. “It does remind me a bit of Macua. I’ve driver street circuits before and they are pretty simple but here there are so many different types of corners some that are off-camber. Local experience, or any kind of experience, was always going to be useful and most useful of all was toaster laden ex-USF1 man Jose Maria Lopez, in for Christoffer Nygaard at Young Driver AMR. The embarrassment of that incident may be one thing but his talent showed in huge swathes as he was comfortably fastest in Q1 and Q3. In the middle went Stefan Mücke, who drove just five practice laps and still went devastatingly fast. Odd car out was the rather heavy (thanks to success ballast) Young Driver car of Enge and Turner, struggling with 40kg of Brazilian weight.

The qualifying race began with a British racing catastrophe orchestrated by two French chaps and a German. Off the line, pole man Stefan Mücke’s Aston got mobbed by Yann Clairray and the Hexis driver was well clear before he was bumped by Mücke. Alongside, future stunt driver Jonathan Hirschi jumped from fifth to third, then managed an extremely graceful 180, followed by a more panicked 180, and seemed as surprised as everyone else as he got pedal to metal exiting the turn in ninth. Mücke was out (which meant that an almost certain win was gone) and Clairray disappeared.

Behind him, all hell broke loose for another 59 minutes and 30 seconds. The Championship leaders (Vitaphone’s Bartels and Bertolini) were taken out and ended up at the back as Christopher Haase’s Lamborghini suffered a technical failure and battered the Maserati (though leaders would be Champions by the end of the race anyway). Richard Westbrook and Maxime Martin had a huge battle alongside Dumbreck, Piccione and Kechele, which will go down in history as one of the series’ best, in a fantastic season. Yann Clairray and Fred Makowiecki, for Hexis Aston Martin, won comfortably.

We probably won’t realise it today but when we are back in Europe it will sink in that it is something special. In the last few races with the lead we had it was expected that we would win but we had to make sure we didn’t make any crazy mistakes because mathematically we could have thrown it away. It seems strange to me that the same approach (one of consistency and measured pace) again brought home the title when the season itself had been so competitive and frantic. In reality the team were not pushed as hard as they could’ve been but that is a story for another day.

The Championship Race, with pressure off everyone (though a handful of positions could still change), proved to be less frantic. Not boring by any stretch (except for the drivers of car number nine, who again drove into the distance and must’ve spent large parts of the race wondering whether everyone else had already gone home), though. At the start, Makowiecki this time romped off and again, car ten stormed forward. This time, in the hands of Clivio Piccione, it remained facing forwards and held second ahead of Richard Westbrook and an ever expanding train behind.
