This weekend Audi heads to the Spa 24 Hours looking to extend its event-winning streak from two to three. Given the competition the marque has faced so far in the 2013 Blancpain Endurance Series, that’s easier said than done.
Standings leaders Cesar Ramos, Davide Rigon and Daniele Zampieri will be keen to repeat their Monza win in the #44 Kessel Racing Ferrari 458 Italia, and make up for a disappointing showing at Spa-Francorchamps last year. Paul Ricard victors Bas Leinders, Yelmer Buurman and Maxime Martin will also be looking to take home the silverware aboard the Marc VDS Racing Team BMW Z4, particularly if they hope to overturn their 14-point deficit to Kessel Racing in the standings. Silverstone winner Darren Turner – who shares driver detail in the GPR AMR Aston Martin Vantage GT3 this weekend with Jamie Campbell-Walter and Bertrand Baguette – is not about to make life easy for them, however.
Though of course, as was the case last year, Audi may find its toughest competitor is the enemy within. Frank Strippler is keen to repeat his illustrious showing at Spa last year alongside Christopher Mies and André Lotterer in the #2 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT, while the sister #1 R8 LMS Ultra of Laurens Vanthoor, Stephane Ortelli and Rene Rast (both former winners of the event) are not about to let them rest on their laurels, especially on WRT’s home turf. After an incident packed qualifying session however, it will be the Pro-Am #70 SMP Racing Ferrari 458 Italia of Alessandro Pier Guidi, Alexey Basov and Alexander Skryabin that starts from pole position following a scintillating lap from the Italian.
