The new Gallardo LP 570-4 Squarda Corse that debuted in Frankfurt may have been absent, but the Lamborghini models on offer on the first day of the Dubai Motor Show was still enough to draw a crowd.

In the red corner was the 700hp Aventador LP 700-4. Powered by a 6.5-litre V12, Lamborghini’s flagship performance machine can hit 350kph and 0-100kph in just 2.9 seconds thanks to a lightweight carbon fibre monocoque with aluminium front and rear frames, grippy Pirelli performance tyres, and quick shift seven-speed ISR transmission. crankandpiston.com has tested the raging bull on home turf and even thrown it into the ring against a McLaren MP4-12C and a Ferrari 458 Italia.

Lining up alongside the Aventador on Lamborghini’s Dubai stage was the model’s open-top counterpart, which crankandpiston got to grips with on the international launch in Miami. Powered by the same V12 unit, the Aventador Roadster produces the same 700hp but is slightly slower to 100kph at 3.0 seconds, though the 350kph top speed remains intact.

This year Lamborghini celebrates its 50th anniversary, the company having originated moved on from its agricultural routes to start building performance cars in 1963.
