Will this become the Maserati Levante SUV?

This is the new Maserati Levante SUV. Sort of.

Actually, given the lengths the company has gone to keep the final design a secret, this is the most we have to go on at the moment. Word has though that these are official company drawings that have ‘inadvertently’ been leaked ahead of the SUV’s proposed debut in Detroit next January.

Those of you who remember the 2011 Kubang concept that emerged at Frankfurt in 2011 will be familiar with the basics, Maserati eschewing the traditional SUV approach in favour of a station wagon whose suspension has been hiked. Still, the design language we’ve come to know and cherish on both the Ghibli and the Quattroporte remains intact, apt since – if, again, rumours are to be believed – the new Levante will use a derivative of the platform currently underpinning the Quattroporte, as well as Maserati’s Q4 all-wheel drive system.

That being the case, engine options could include the 3.0-litre V6 and 3.8-litre V8 units found in the Trident’s already established saloon line-up, with power similar to that found in the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, the Range Rover Sport and Bentley’s new Bentayga, the Levante’s key segment rivals.
