Back in 2007, Toyota released a beautiful prototype teaser at the North American International Auto Show. It was called the FT-HS (or Future Toyota Hybrid Sport) and marked the company’s first foray back into the sports car world in quite some time.

Naturally, Toyota fandom went through the roof, and people began wistfully reminiscing about the marque’s great sports cars of the 1980s: the Celica, the Supra, and – in particular – the Corolla AE86.

It’s now been 26 years since Toyota launched the first AE86, one of their greatest rear-wheel drive creations. As a lightweight coupe, the AE86 proved easy to modify, and with all the power being pushed through the rear wheels, the Toyota soon made a big impression on the drifting scene.

The Toyota-designated 4U-GSE engine is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that uses Subaru‘s horizontally opposed boxer engine as well as Toyota’s D-4S injection system, which uses both direct and port injection. With 86mm x 86mm square bore and stroke, the engine produces 197hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. That’s good enough for a 0-100kph run in six seconds.

Look closely and you’ll see just how far Toyota has gone to establish this: the 86mm square bore and stroke in the engine; the chrome tipped exhaust valve measuring 86mm; the 86mm diameter of the air-conditioning ventilation rings.

It’s worth mentioning here that the AE86 even garnered a cool nickname: the ‘hachiroku’ (‘hachi’ is eight, and ‘roku’ is six in Japanese, just FYI). Today, that influence has spread to the 86, which is now referred to as ‘neo hachi‘.
