RC Drift Battle. More Than A Hobby

He’s not wrong. Around our ankles whizz an RC Honda Civic, a turbo(!) Toyota Aristo, and a Ford Focus, the latter in just its mechanical underpinnings as its driver makes final handling checks before hitting the track.

Parc ferme for the event – the collection of folding chairs and trestle tables in the far corner – is very active as the dozen or so competitors tweak this and change that on their respective challengers. Numerous hardtop cases and duffel bags are brimming with small plastic wheels, mini-screwdrivers and spare batteries.

And the intricacy of the mechanics is frankly baffling. Each RC Battle is divided into two categories, Open and Advance. The differentiation between them is set by counter steer percentage (CS 50-99% and CS 100%+ respectively), which basically dictates the speed that is sent through the rear wheels of these 1:10 scale model cars. This requires adjustments to the RC’s gearing and telemetry, as well as tweaks to the electronics, the bodykits, the tyre camber, shock and damper settings. Even the oil in the miniature springs needs to be attended to!

Though the guys have stopped short of replicating an actual drift course – since this may be too difficult for some of the greener debutants – a good deal of effort has gone into the track design. There’s high speed sweeping corners, a figure of eight, and a tight twisting chicane, all of which are accompanied with ‘grassy areas’ and perimeter fencing upon which an RC Chevrolet Corvette seems hell-bent on mounting itself (“well if you will bring a muscle car to these things”). One of the fences even has a Drift UAE sticker on it, a probable nod to DubDrift’s current deal with the organization.
