It seems like only a short while ago that a hot hatchback with more than 200bhp was considered an absolute beast. Well, those days are truly gone, as Audi’s just released images of its new RS3 Sportback, with a ridiculous 362bhp under the bonnet.

The hottest Audi A3 on the block is powered by a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine, driving all four wheels in the traditional quattro fashion. It’ll hit 100kph from standstill in 4.3 seconds thanks in large part to 343lb ft of torque, available from 1625rpm all the way through to 5550rpm. Meaty.

The new RS3 Sportback is some 55kg lighter than its predecessor, and some fancy flap-filled exhausts promise a suitable chunky soundtrack, as befits its performance. Visually, the RS3 is 25mm lower than the standard A3 Sportback, with a wider front track, and has the option of ceramic front brakes. The usual accoutrements differentiate it from the standard A3, such as a gloss black front grille, wider front wings, door sills and a rear spoiler. Inside, leather and Alcantara abound and bucket seats are standard.

We’ll see the RS3 Sportback at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and sales will start around the summer.
