Mercedes C63 AMG vs BMW M3 E92. Bitte Rivals

That said, it still makes for stonking progress. Although I can’t carry the speed through the corner in such confidence, the grip at the back means I can get on the gas earlier and use that mountain of torque to haul myself out of it. On these roads, the overall pace of both cars is very, very similar.

Ultimately, the M3 remains the best handling car of this pair. At the limit its more composed, more intuitive and more fun. The C63 can’t compete with the level of finesse and sharpness that the BMW possesses. Its steering is too light at speed and its more of a blunt instrument, delivering its thrills through massive gobs of torque and seriously fast acceleration. In that respect, it feels slightly too stiffly sprung for its character; it’s happiest when munching up motorway miles or charging down wide, relatively straight roads, so a bit more give would be nice to increase the comfort factor.

The Merc, however, boasts the better quality interior and more comfortable, supporting seats than the M3. It also has more toys that make it preferable for dealing with the rigours of everyday life; the adaptive cruise control, which continues to work all the way to standstill, was a particular Godsend during the several times we were stuck in traffic during our time with the car.

This well-behaved character is both its strength and its undoing. It feels very much like an extremely powerful C-class, whereas the M3 feels like a whole different car to the previous generation 3 Series from which it was derived. The Mercedes is excellent for using every day and getting thrills from that glorious waft of acceleration whenever an on-ramp opens up or the speed cameras are being serviced. The drive back to Dubai showed that the M3 is not quite as refined in that respect, but it’s superior when it comes to leaving the suit jacket on the back seats and heading into the mountains on the weekend to play.

Which of these characters is most appealing to the masses will be a subjective question. Both cars are excellent examples of German engineering and both will spread very large smiles across the faces of anyone that gets behind their wheels. The prices may influence the decisions of some – at $103,463, the BMW is more than $30K more expensive than the basic $71,350 Mercedes, although once the options boxes for the AMG package, safety systems, keyless entry and other fancy extras are ticked, the C63 we drove retails for $102,914.

Overall, I prefer the sharpness of the M3 over the sledgehammer power of the Merc, and am hugely impressed that the BMW more than holds its own after half a decade. The C63 is a great machine as well, overcoming its relative lack of finesse with brute strength. I just wish the lunatic power was matched by a more rounded approach that sets it well apart from the standard Mercedes.
