Criminally, it was my first visit to the ‘Green Hell’ and I was rather looking forward to stretching the legs of our 120d hire car on the Nordschlieffe during our time there.

Unfortunately, rather obscene rain on the first few days put the brakes on that idea and the track was closed for some private BMW training the next day, so I returned without tackling the hallowed tarmac. Next time…

Back on the GP track, Fred and Julian were having a whale of a time in their Lotus 2-Elevens – which have since seen battle in the UAE GT Championship, plus one will compete in the Dubai 24hrs.

The events are a combination of autocross, drifting, gymkhana and a bit of wet surface fun thrown in for good measure.

Who better to attend than Phil who had spent most of his working life with the historic brand. Despite Ian Callum completely reinventing the brand with the current line-up of cars, it’s good to see that there are still many features carried over from the past masters.

Before the start of the 2010/2011 UAE GT Championship, we followed the House of Portier / TAM Auto Engineering team in Hockenheim as they shook down their GTA Corvette after it received a few upgrades. The team were also busy working with Callaway on their new GTB Corvette ready to take battle to the rest of the grid.

Though the season didn’t get off to the best of starts in Round 1 after the GTA car caught fire due to a technical issue, the boys came back in style in Round 2 winning with both cars.

However, they have the NFS Racing Dodge Viper and the Zytech-engined Ginetta G50 Z nipping at their heels. The rest of the season is going to be a nail-biter that’s for sure.
