The monster circuit that is Road Atlanta and the tiny ring of Lime Rock Park are brilliant places to shoot as well.

The street circuit in Detroit on Belle Isle had a bit of a Gotham City vibe going for it.

The Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (yeah, that’s the long name) was a decent surprise for me this year. This is a feeder/support series to the Rolex GT and DP races. Often times these series are boring or not very well presented. Under no circumstances is this true for the CTSCC. The fields often reach as much as seventy cars split across two classes.

The racing is fierce and the cars are very well built and run by professional teams. However, the downfall is the level of competition sometimes (and by sometimes I mean almost always) turns the race into melee and results if half or more of the race being run under yellow or behind a safety car. Still, some of most entertaining racing I witnessed this year was put on by these guys.

Often when I would get bored or have no specific clients to shoot during a particular session, I would start to experiment with loads more motion blur, or with shooting through elements in the foreground. This was mostly just for my own amusement, trying to push things to the extreme. At one point I was able to shoot handheld at 1/3rd of a second and still get some resemblance of sharpness in the shots.

The resulting photos are often not particularly useful for anything other than being “funky”, or some people would just call them total crap, but it’s all just an exercise for me to keep my mind fresh.

I often find myself overlooking the other important aspects of motor racing besides just the cars on a track. This year I really tried to push myself to work on having an eye for the human side of racing. I think my time with LAT in IndyCar really was instrumental in this respect by requiring me to shoot more of the off-track action than I had in the past.

I still think this area is where I need to improve, but I definitely feel like I did a better job this year of capturing the emotions, details, and stories that are the driving force behind each and every race.
