All that changed though the following afternoon when a blinding start by Wurz took Fässler completely unawares at the first corner. Fired up by the team’s first podium in Silverstone and first victory last time out in Sao Paulo, the Austrian was soon on a charge, hunting down McNish in the lead Audi. By the seventh lap, Wurz found the gap and made it stick. P1.

From there, the Toyota simply disappeared into the distance, McNish (now in second) playing the long game on tyre strategy, but unable to keep pace nonetheless. Soon Wurz had put 20s of asphalt between the Toyota and its nearest challenger. Come the nightfall though, the rot had set in.

Owing to an electrical gremlin that had eaten away during the opening two hours, the Toyota’s illuminated door panel numbers refused to light up, and as dusk gave way to darkness, the call came in from the race officials: stop and fix it, or DQ the whole event. The Toyota lost four laps on pit road getting the problem fixed, falling to fifth as a result, powerless to stop the #1 Audi take the lead.

With the issue seemingly sorted, the Toyota began ramping up the pace again, demolishing fastest lap times and soon latching itself onto the #1 Audi running in second place. By the break of the fifth hour, the Toyota was back onto the podium, and hunting down the leader. Once again though, fate dealt another blow, one which hit particularly hard.
