It’s difficult not to laugh. Not mockingly obviously, since nobody had looked even close to catching Toyota as the race entered its third hour. The way in which the Japanese marque was denied an easy victory though sent a couple of chuckles skywards, farcical as it was.

Gearbox issues? A hydraulics problem? Engine failure? Nope. Malfunctioning illuminated numbers on the door panels.

Open the rulebook, read the fine print, and the ruling is in there. After all, if you’re driving a car on the limit, the last thing you want to do is smack into a machine you can’t see because it’s lights aren’t working. In fairness, Audi may have reason to argue that point. Yes, Alexander Wurz and Nicolas Lapierre in the Toyota TS030 Hybrid had topped the weekend’s opening practice session by nearly a second, but from then on the pairing never got a look in, the Audi juggernaut firmly snatching one-two positions in each of the remaining practice sessions, and morning warm-up.

No real surprise then that Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish once again planted the #2 R18 e-tron Quattro on pole, with Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoit Tréluyer in the sister #1 Audi lining up just 0.074s behind. After a promising start, Wurz and Lapierre had to be content with third on the grid.
