WEC 2012. Round 4, Silverstone. Sealing The Deal

Circumnavigating the odd spin and spill here or there brought the field back onto their tails, but despite the odd hiccup (and turn of speed from the frugal Toyota TS030 hybrid bringing the familiar emblem menacingly into the Audi wing mirrors, Fässler, Lotterer and Tréluyer still had enough in hand after six hours (though just a little over second when all was said and done) to storm to their second victory of the season and their second in succession. The sun from a beautifully dry Silverstone weekend shone down brightly on the teammates,  glinting off the newly won Manufacturer’s Championship trophy they held aloft to a sea of cameras.

That their teammates in the #2 entry were not standing only one step below them did however come as a bit of a surprise. Reliability issues had thwarted the Toyota boys efforts at Le Mans, and many wondered if technical gremlins would rear their ugly haunches once again in Northamptonshire. But the TS030’s speed was good – very good – and Alex Wurz, Kazuki Nakajima and Nicolas Lapierre could hold their heads up high knowing they’d beaten the second Audi in a fair fight to take Toyota’s first WEC points, and its first series podium.

To some, it was cruel fate that Anthony Davidson, still with an injured back after a violent accident at the Le Mans 24hrs, could not join his teammates on the podium at home, while Scotsman Alan McNish along with Audi #2 teammate Tom Kristensen rued a similar missed opportunity before the British crowd.

Further back in LMP1, Andrea Belicchi and Harold Primat topped the charts as ‘best of the rest’ in Rebellion Racing’s Lola B12/60 just (and oh wow, only just!) ahead of British trio Danny Watts, Jonny Kane and Nick Leventis in the Strakka Racing HPD ARX-03A. The ‘top spot’ had been under assault early doors by Nicolas Prost and Harold Primat in the second Rebellion Racing entry, though the #12 car soon fell off the leading pack.
