Volkswagen used the Detroit Motor Show to unveil the third concept car that previews a new production mid-size SUV. The latest one, called the Cross Coupé GTE, follows the CrossBlue Coupé unveiled at the LA show in November, and the CrossBlue shown in Detroit in 2013.

The Cross Coupé GTE is a plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive, and Volkswagen says it previews the company’s new US design language, “combing German engineering with the American way of life”, whatever that means. The production car, when we eventually see it, will be tailored towards the US market and built at Volkswagen‘s plant in Tennessee.

Under the bonnet of the Cross Coupé GTE is a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine, combined with two electric motors at the front and the rear. Combined, the powertrain makes 355bhp, giving the car a top speed of 209kph and a 0-97kph (0-60mph) time of six seconds dead. In electric-only mode, the Cross Coupé GTE has a range of 32km. It can also be set up for on-road or off-road driving, and even has a Sport feature.
