It was a hot and sticky night! When I say hot, I mean seriously balmy, however the antisocial Middle Eastern weather had nothing for the enthusiasm shown by the Evolve.ae/Tensai/One Thousand Dunes brigade as they took the trip out to the stunning Yas Marina circuit for a bit of autocross/drift/gymkhana in the wet handling car park just next to the Yas Drag Strip.
I left “The Duchess” in the car port and hopped into the awesome little hot hatch i had sat on the drive. Thankfully said hatch was the Mk6 Volkswagen GTI and as you can imagine, it made mince meat of the slog to Abu Dhabi. Shamefully though I didn’t get to take it out on the track as I am more than sure it would have held its head high.

The bikes where a neat add on that needs to be exercised a bit more. I would also say they should think about their routine a bit more…if they get it nailed it could be an even greater addition to the evening.

I got the impression that a bunch of the drivers where having difficulty with the transition between wet and dry. Pushing hard on the dry track and then taking the same approach onto the wet stuff just resulted in massive understeer moments. Most of those problems where just fixed with a liberal stab of the throttle though…

A cheeky Renault Clio V6 was out there strutting it’s stuff. I didn’t manage to catch up with the driver, however he was keeping the tricky little monster on the edge throughout the evening. It sounded awesome too!
