Sir Stirling Moss will be forever inked in Formula One as arguably the greatest driver never to win the World Championship. Though that is not to say that he take his fair share of global stage plaudits.

Possibly the most famous of these was his triumph in the 1955 Mille Miglia, during which he became the first Englishmen to win the harrowing endurance event and increased the record average speed by a full 16kph. As well as Moss’s tenacity, much was owed to the Mercedes 300 SLR in which he competed. Okay, this particular 658 was actually driven by team-mate Juan Manuel Fangio who came in second, but the figures speak for themselves: an (at the time) unorthodox five-speed manual transmission, 310hp, and an eight-cylinder 3.0l engine that – on occasion – was run on alcohol.
