Out on the street. Old School Tank. More thoughts?

After causing a mini stir with the pics that we posted a couple of days back asking for any thoughts about the big tank shot through the trees, I thought it time to share with you a couple more of the ferrets droppings.

  1. This is becoming frustrating! The boxed front wings and the more subdued wingline suggest 1958 or 1959 and the wraparound front bumper suggest period Mercury or Ford derivatives, but the wheels are reverse-rims, so non-standard and the scoop on the bonnet looks to be a customised addition – probably no need for it in manufacture because of the full width grille.

The half moon speedo too, suggests Ford Motor Company of the period but I still can’t get my head round the proportions from the original shot.

Dodges, Plymouths, Chryslers and DeSotos of the time were still quite flamboyant and the General Motors stuff was a bit more squared off, as revisions of the classic ’57 Bel Air – GM did not get cleaner lines on Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, Chevrolets or Buicks, never mind Cadillacs until 1960. It’s not a Lincoln or anything from the ‘American Motors’ stable – Packard, Studebaker or Rambler and the weird stuff like Kaiser, Nash and so on had all virtually died off by the late 50s.

My money is on a mildly customised 1959 Mercury. But it could still be a Russian clone from the early sixties, Clearly, I’m going to have to go and look for it again!

  2. I must confess….I saw and recognized that thing parked outside Performance today. So I stopped, had a nice long smoke, stroled around it, sized it up and down…. and….no clue! O.o
