The Dakar Rally frequently crops up on lists of the most dangerous races worldwide. Rightly so, as competitors fight through harsh desert terrain, covering long distances, all in the hope of winning the coveted title. An endurance race all the way, the Rally has claimed about 60 lives, with 27 competitors paying the ultimate price to race through the unforgiving deserts of Africa.

When Peugeot unveiled its plans to return to return to the Dakar in 2015, our interest was piqued. Now that they have shown us the car, we’re busy betting that the Peugeot has more than a fighting chance of winning. Who are we kidding? Gambling is illegal kids!

Named the Peugeot 2008 DKR, the car has one major gambit up its sleeve. Its rear wheel drive. Eh? A bold decision, made after a good amount of research, made with the sole objective of giving Team Peugeot Total a Dakar victory. Additionally, it will enable the team to attempt to make history by being the first ones to win the Rally with a ‘diesel powered two-wheel drive vehicle.’

Said diesel engine is a powerful unit producing 340bhp and 590lb ft of torque. Blessed with twin turbos, it is safe to assume that the Peugeot participants will not be short of grunt. Additionally a tyre pressure system has been fitted, allowing the driver to change tyre pressures by pushing a button in the cockpit, while racing.

The 2015 Dakar Rally is going to be hoot, that’s for sure. For the spectators that is!
