His name though was the first to jump out at me when perusing the event’s entry list. The Finn has, after all, done it all. All hope seems lost though as the podium celebrations are finishing up and the Dubai paddock is closing up for another year: with gazelle-like speed, the Finn has disappeared again. But out of the corner of my eye, I spot the familiar white and blue helmet being passed across the garage as Salo says goodbye to his mechanics. Time to pounce.

Mika, it’s your first time competing in the Dubai 24hrs and you’ve managed to score a podium. Yet another accolade to add to a pretty impressive career…

“Yeah, absolutely. I was actually talking with a friend about this last week, and it’s been 41 years since I started motor racing. A long time, but it looks like I’m getting better as I get older!”

It’s a new line-up for AF Corse this week with you racing alongside Lorenzo Case, Marco Cioci and Lorenzo Carvalho in the #16 458 Italia. How have you all gelled?

“Well I didn’t know any of these guys before the event, and I’d never raced with them either. I know the team of course, I’ve raced with them many, many times. But I wasn’t sure how the guys raced or how they setup the car or anything like that. So I just tried not to get too involved with that. I concentrate on my driving and let the guys get themselves comfortable in their own time.

“But it’s been good. The car worked well and none of us made any mistakes. It was a tough race because of the traffic and all the slow cars. But I’m happy that the Ferrari worked well. It’s not the win, but it’s a good result nonetheless.”

You’re fast establishing yourself as a GT specialist but you’re most well-known for your days in Formula One. How difficult was it to make the transition from single seaters to GT machinery?

“At the beginning, the most difficult part was that you had to share the car with somebody. You have to compromise with the setup, and all this kind of thing. But then I started working with Jaime Melo [who took GT Class victory at the Le Mans 24hrs with Mika in 2008 and 2009].

“Our driving styles were really similar, and that’s basically why we won pretty much everything. It worked really well we trusted each other a lot and there was no competition in the team. So that was fine, but yes, sharing was the most difficult part in the first few races.”

You’ve been working closely with Ferrari since your part campaign in F1 in 1999, when you subbed for an injured Michael Schumacher. Is your relationship with the team still as strong as it was in the early days?

“Yeah! (Laughs) I still do a lot of things with them. I’ve tried a couple of times to stop, thinking it’s my time to go, but it’s impossible! You can’t get out of motorsport once you’re in! And I really do enjoy working with Ferrari.”

There’s been some memorable moments in your F1 career: your third place at the Italian Grand Prix in 1999 in Ferrari colours; the German Grand Prix you could have won but for team orders earlier that same season; three consecutive points finishes for minnows Tyrell and Arrows at Monaco from 1995-97. Which stands out as your best moments?

“Of course it’s with Ferrari. They’re so professional, a great bunch of people, and everything is taken to the extremes. They want everything from the driver, they want no excuses, and you just need to make sure you perform. It’s the same with the team from Formula One to GT racing: they want everything out of you.

“And I like that. I like that they want everything. If I’d just come here this weekend and relaxed and had a holiday, it wouldn’t have worked for anybody.”
