TOKYO MOTOR SHOW. The new Mazda RX7?…

Mazda has unveiled its new RX-Vision concept model today, at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The Mazda sports car concept is rear-wheel drive and is powered by a front-mounted next-generation Skyactiv-R rotary engine. Yes! That legendary rotary engine, which went out of production with the RX8 model in 2012, is back!

Rotary engines are unique in that they generate power through the rotational motion of triangular rotors (unlike the reciprocating pistons in conventional automotive engines). Mazda commercialised rotary power first in the Mazda Cosmo Sport 110S in 1967. The most successful rotary model was the Mazda RX-7 – the most-sold rotary car ever, with more than 800,000 produced between 1978 and 2002.
