Those of you who insist the Cayenne SUV is ‘not a real Porsche’ may really start gnashing your teeth at this, the new Porsche Macan S.

Before the cries of sorrow wrench forth though, let’s consider a few things. The Macan – the sixth model line on Porsche’s books – is being marketed as ‘the most dynamic vehicle in the compact sports utility vehicle segment’. We’re off to a good start with a 3.0-litre bi-turbo V6 that chucks out 340hp in the Macan S, meaning a 5.4-second 0-100kph time.

‘Porsche to the core’, there’s also the new Porsche Traction Management system (which transfers torque between the front and rear axles to improve grip), active all-wheel drive for better traction, and the always correctly spelt seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung PDK double clutch transmission. For added oomph, the drivetrain includes a Sport mode for more dynamic steering, suspension and gearshifts, and a couple of cheeky options including the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus – which transfers torque to the outside wheel whilst cornering for improved traction – and a Sport chrono package, which enables the chassis, engine and transmission to be tuned to a sportier level.

If that’s not enough to convince you, a top of the range Macan Turbo will also be available, which is powered by a 400hp 3.6-litre V6 that hits 100kph from standstill in 4.8 seconds. We’ve given turbo Porsche SUVs a go in the past, and can confirm they are something of a giggle.

There’s time to mull that lot over then before the Macan hits the roads in April next year. Prices for the Macan S start from $68,930 while the Macan Turbo wades in at $95,080
