To the casual observer then, the 3.2 Carrera and the 1978 911SC had rolled off the conveyer belt together. That was until said observer took a glimpse at the new 3164cc six-cylinder under the bonnet, 80 percent new as it was and a marked development over the preceding 3.0-litre powerplant in the SC. Kicking out some 231bhp, the 3.2 Carrera – though not the most powerful on Porsche’s books – offered enthusiasts a sample of Porsche performance for a fraction of the price. Plus, thanks to aerodynamic developments over the years, the ability to put said performance to the test without slamming into a tree, lamppost or your neighbour’s poodle.
This being a 1980s 911 of course, that didn’t mean the driving experience wasn’t still – shall we say – ‘seat of the pants’, with woolly steering a hindrance on occasion when the front end would go hair-whiteningly light at speed, thanks to all that weight over the rear axle. Power delivery was at least improved in 1987 when the troublesome 915 gearbox from the SC was replaced in the 3.2 Carrera by a new Getrag G50 unit, offering smoother shifts and more controllable acceleration as a result. Indeed, models that boast the new unit – such as this 1988 model, shot by our mates over at Fast-Auto – are among the most sought after today: one careful owner for the past ten years, 120,000km on the clock, and still a regular today at concourse events across Europe. But don’t expect it to go under the auctioneers hammer anytime soon.
While enjoying the longest production run of any 911 generation, the G-Series would face competition in 1988 when the newer, grungier 964 arrived on the scene. Its illustrious predecessor would last only one more year before the book closed on the G-Series for good in 1989.
