New Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept set for 2018 Detroit Motor Show debut

Lexus will reveal the LF-1 Limitless concept in Detroit, previewing a new flagship coupe-SUV production car.

Is Lexus attempting to point its SUV range in a more dynamic and stylish direction? A shadowy teaser image released by the brand represents our first look at the LF-1 Limitless concept car, it’s set to debut at the 2018 Detroit motor show in January with Lexus describing it as a ‘crossover with no limits’.

Information is in short supply at this stage but Lexus does reveal that the concept is the work of its CALTY design studio in Newport Beach, California and that it’s a ‘flagship model that seeks to redefine the boundaries of luxury’.

The picture, an elevated and offset view from the rear of the car, shows what appears to be a 2-door coupe-SUV with sharply sculpted lines and a sweeping rear light treatment that runs across the tailgate from wheel arch to wheel arch. There are similarities to Toyota’s striking C-HR compact crossover around the angular C-pillar and rear window line.

Although no pictures showing the inside of the LF-1 Limitless have been released, it’s possible to glimpse two of the car’s interior display screens in the teaser image. They are visible illuminated in the darkness through the concept’s side window and panoramic glass roof. The most striking feature, however, is probably the unusual split roof spoiler highlighted by red LED lighting around its trailing edges.

The Lexus LF-1 Limitless gets LF branding in line with many recent Lexus concept cars. The only LF-branded Lexus model to make production so far was the iconic LFA supercar built from 2010 to 2012 with its spine-tingling 9,500rpm V10 engine.

Any production version of the LF-1 would presumably slot-in above the RX at the top of the Lexus SUV range, providing an alternative to premium coupe-SUVs like BMW’s X6 and the Mercedes GLE Coupe. Lexus’ preferred petrol-electric hybrid powertrains would be favourites to form the mainstay of the engine range.

We’ll know more when the covers come off the Lexus LF-1 Limitless at the Detroit motor show, which runs from January 13, 2018.
