The fastest Audi just got faster – meet the new R8 V10 plus. The introduction of this new 542bhp incarnation R8 is the highlight of an overhaul of the whole range that includes some visual tweaks and and a brand new seven-speed S tronic transmission. The power hike – up from 518bhp in the standard R8 V10 – gives the R8 V10 plus a 0-100kph time of 3.5 seconds (0.1 faster than the standard V10) and a top speed of 317kph, 3 faster than the V10.

Sports car spotters, take note – the new R8 is distinguishable by its gloss black grille and chrome horizontale inserts on the struts. The bumper has been fiddled to give it three crossbars on each air inlet, and there’s a carbonfibre reinforced plastic front splitter that’s standard on the R8 V10 plus and optional on other models. All models have LED headlights and the outside mirrors and side blades are made from CFRP on the R8 V10 plus, as is the illuminated engine compartment lining. Shiny.

Like on a Mustang, but more expensive. There’s an enlarged rear diffuser that’s CFRP on the R8 V10 plus, housing two round, black painted tailpipes.

The R8 V10 plus is lighter than its V10-powered siblings at 1570kg, and only 10kg heavier than the V8 model thanks to less insulation, lightweight alloy wheels and chassis components, as well as the various CFRP elements.

In its native Europe, the R8 V10 plus is on sale for EUR 173,200 ($209,000), compared to EUR 154,600 ($186,556) for the regular R8 V10.
