Mercedes-Benz X-Class. Your new fancy pickup revealed.

Mercedes-Benz just stomped into the markets of Hilux, D-Max, L200, Navara and Ranger with the all-new X-Class.

On a livestream last night from South Africa, Mercedes-Benz revealed the all-new X-Class pickup truck. The fanciest pickup you could lay your eyes on, letting you do your heavy duty work, then go off-road in style. We’ve been teased by Mercedes about the X-Class for a while now, and there were so many renders online (which some of them now look pretty accurate). Now that the car is out, all we can say is “Mhhmmm, inttteeresing..”

So as for the looks, it looks like it combines bits and pieces from several pickups that we know of, and then inheriting Mercedes-Benz genes. The resemblances between other vehicles were from: Nissan Navara side profile, Ford Ranger headlight design, mixed with a GLS front end. Speaking of Navara … the X-Class will share the same frame.

Mercedes mentioned that the pickup will offer “robustness, functionality, strength and off-road capabilities – with the classical characteristics of a real Mercedes – design, comfort, driving dynamics and safety.”

As for performance, the X-Class with have the following engine options:

  • V6 diesel with 190 kW/258 hp
  • Diesel X220d 120 kW/163 hp
  • Diesel X250d 140 kW/190 hp
  • Petrol X200 122 kW/165 hp

For the drivetrain, it will carry the 4Matic all-wheel drive system, with low gearing and optional differential lock. A ladder-type frame, with rear multi-link solid axle, front independent wheel suspension and coil springs on both axles.
Towing capacity is claimed to be at 3.5 tons, so you could easily tow your 8-meter yacht.

The interior is just great, it gives the great quality of Mercedes, but keeping in mind that this vehicle is a pickup truck, so of course there will be a lot of plastics, to save cost, which is understandable. I’m sure Brabus will step in and do something crazy in the future.

As for the price, it starts at $36,000 (Excluding european VAT). Would I want one? Maybe. We’ll see.
