Well, Jaguar is serious. In these days of increased focus on economy, the (Indian-owned) British luxury carmaker is expanding its range of powertrains available in its 2013MY flagship large saloon-cum-limousine. So now, as well as the naturally aspirated and supercharged 5.0L V8s, the XJ is available with a new 3.0L supercharged V6 and, most intriguingly, a 2.0L turbocharged affair.

This is intriguing. On the one hand, the sheer size of the XJ makes me immediately think that a 2.0L will struggle like hell to move it. On the other hand, the XJ is largely hewn from lightweight aluminium, and Jag has enough attention to detail to ensure that all engines approved for use will be up to scratch. Right?

To find out, I’ve come to England to drive both new engines and see if Jaguar has actually gone mad. After a flight into Heathrow from Dubai on the rather swanky Emirates A380 (sadly not in first class though – no shower for me), I’m whisked by Jag to the extremely picturesque town of Henley-on-Thames, which will be our base for a couple of days. That’s Henley above. It’s postcard pretty.
