Just darting back to my previous post where we were talking about recessions and potential pit falls of the racing season; Yet I’ve counted more than 50 cars entered to race next season so far. Yes, that’s five-zero and counting! That’s a good chunk more than there were last year, give or take the odd Honda. In short, we’re talking explosive growth here, in the middle of an economic meltdown.Surely somebody must be smoking from the wrong end of the sheesha pipe then?The only logical way I can explain this is that petrolheads must be of a completely different species than normal humans. Normal humans, when faced with a global economic Valhalla, would stash their cash into gold. Or tuck it all away safely in an offshore account in a relatively stable currency.Perhaps invest in that quiet retirement cottage someplace unbelievably picturesque that smells of daisies and sheep dung. Or simply stuff it under their mattress! Anything really, as opposed to sinking every cent into the loudest, maddest, most overly complicated and scandalously expensive race car they can get their hands on with the sole intention of hammering it around racetracks at light speed elbow with 50 other crazy people.Yet here we go down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.

2009-2010 brings some crucial changes to the format of what was formerly knows as the UAETCC. The savvy folks at the autodrome gambled on there being growth in the sport, and in order to accommodate this they’ve split the UAETCC into two separate series.

The first of these, the GT Championship, caters to the high end of the market by echoing the popular FIA GT3 and GT4 series, while allowing a good amount of scope for innovation in terms of eligibility which is sure to delight the local race car junkies.

The GT Series is made up of three classes; GTA, GTB and GTC, which are distinguished from one another by way of strictly enforced power to weight ration benchmarks to keep things on the up and up and prevent competitors from getting too carried away (which some are obviously quite happy to do).

The race format for the GT series is new as well, with single 45 minute races (including a single mandatory pit stop for driver changes) as opposed to the previous format which consisted of two 20 minute sprints.

In addition to attracting all manner of wild and exotic machinery (as we shall see soon enough) the new, longer race format places alot more emphasis on car preparation, reliability and consistency while also introducing an interesting element of chance by way of the pit stops, where precious seconds will surely be made up and lost.

The second series is the UAE Touring Car series, which caters to compact/saloon type cars with smaller displacement engines.

Due to their tendency to increase their numbers like rabbits in heat, the Touring cars will now run separately from the GT cars.

The race format of two 20 minute sprint races being carried over from last year. Again there will be three categories in the TCC – Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3, which are separated by both engine displacement limitations as well as minimum weight benchmarks.

If last season is anything to go by, the racing in the TCC series should make for some very close and intense door to door racing as the only way to win is to go completely balls out from start to finish, seizing every single opportunity to make a move before the chequered flag falls.

Due to the huge number of entries on both the GT and TCC series enthusiasts are in for some great racing action.

What more could one hope for than having a huge variety of machinery, from uber dollar exotics to humble Suzikis, piloted by very determined drivers and supported by teams that run like Swiss clockwork all lining up and going toe to toe in a variety of race formats?

It will be dramatic, melodramatic and intense fun all at the same time.
