Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX flagship teased – 1000-kilometre electric saloon under development

As Mercedes-Benz outlines its future strategy, we’ve been given our first glimpse of the next step in its EV offensive

Alongside further details of its planned EV expansion, Mercedes-Benz has offered a first look at its upcoming EQXX flagship saloon ahead of a 2022 reveal. The teaser comes with confirmation of a trio of fresh EV architectures and a proposed shift to a pure-electric lineup by 2030.

The EQXX is set to solidify the marque’s place in the EV segment with some class-leading figures. Though we’ll have to wait until 2022 for final details, Mercedes-Benz is targeting a real-world range of over 1000 kilometre and unmatched efficiency too, aiming for a single-digit figure for KWh per 100 kilometres – this would put the EQXX far ahead of any electric vehicle currently on sale.

With the help of €40+ billion in investment in the segment, Mercedes-Benz plans to move from an ‘electric-first’ brand to ‘electric-only’ within the next eight years – it currently has its sights on going electric-only by 2030 should market conditions allow. Changes are coming sooner, too, with an electric model set to be available in every segment the company serves by 2022 and an all-electric variant of every Mercedes model to be available by 2025.

Ola Källenius, CEO of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, said: ‘The EV shift is picking up speed – especially in the luxury segment, where Mercedes-Benz belongs. The tipping point is getting closer and we will be ready as markets switch to electric-only by the end of this decade.’

The brand’s first bespoke EV came in the form of the EQS launched in April this year, but there are plenty more in the pipeline. From 2025, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that all new architectures will be electric-only, with three set to be launched that year: MB.EA for medium to large passenger cars, AMG.EA for performance and VAN.EA for purpose-built electric vans and light commercial vehicles.

Announced last year was the EVA platform, designed to support a smaller ‘business’ model called EQE, which will mimic the EQS’s basic design, but in a smaller and less opulent package. A similar EQE SUV derivative will also be joining the electric line-up, essentially replacing the current EQC electric SUV, which shares its less-bespoke platform with the combustion-powered GLC. The EVA platform will later be joined by a smaller EV platform called MMA, which will underpin a new generation of small-to-medium models across all body shapes beyond 2025.

Mercedes-Benz’s plans have also shone a light on what to expect from its sub-brands too, with AMG, Maybach and G all to gain electrified models and full EVs. Maybach will expand its own brand of luxury to the EQS and EQS SUV.

And what about AMG? Its first plug-in hybrid model will be along shortly in the form of the GT73 4-Door, topping the 4-Door range with an estimated 700bhp+ power figure. The same powertrain will then be shared with other large AMG models, including the new S-class. However, rumours of former AMG boss Tobias Moers walking out due to a dispute over the alleged death of AMG’s internal-combustion engine lines does leave the brand’s sportiest models in question in the long term…
