Hurley Haywood’s career reads like a Who’s Who and What’s What of endurance racing. He’s won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Porsche three times (1977 aboard the 936, 1983 with the 956) and in 1994 (in the Dauer 962 Le Mans). He’s taken two victories in the 12 Hours of Sebring (1973, Carrera RSR; and 1981, 935/80). Between 1973 and 1979, he only lost at Daytona three times, and won the 24 Hours event for a fifth time in 1991. And he’s one of the lucky few who raced the famous Porsche 959.

Today he gets re-acquainted with the 959, albeit a very special one. This particular model is one of only six prototypes built for the late Helmuth Bott, former director of the company’s research and development division.

So, the 959: the work of an evening? Hardly. Just ask Haywood, director of the Brumos Collection (which owns this particular model) Don Leatherwood, and CEO of Porsche 1981-86, Peter Schutz. They’ll tell you quite a different story.
