Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo. Ultimate Race Car?

Take a groundbreaking race car of the 1960s. Add the guy behind Gran Turismo, the might of Chevrolet and a laser propulsion system. This is what you get.

For all the times that car makers need to think about safety regulation, business models and customer demographics, sometimes they just want to create something awesome. And why not? Most car designers were small children sketching ludicrous concepts at one point, and for many that desire never goes away.

So it shouldn’t really be surprised that this has happened. A team at Chevrolet took inspiration from legendary race car company Chaparral, one of the pioneers of using aerodynamics in motorsport. Check out this example, the 2E, with its enormous rear wing.

They then hooked up with Kazanori Yamauchi, the man behind the Gran Turismo series of video games, and designed a modern homage to the Chaparral, called the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo.

It is, as you might expect, absolutely insane – as aerodynamic as anything yet created and powered by lasers. Yes, really. You can hear the story behind it in the video below.

The downside? It’s not real – it currently only exists in the Gran Turismo computer universe, apart from a mock-up made for the Los Angeles Motor Show this month (below). We think Chevrolet should try and build a working version. Who’s with us?
