The other 98% come equipped with the six-speed robotized manual box, or e-gear in Lamborghini speak. Although it’s a world away from the smooth-shifting dual-clutch boxes that you find in the Ferrari California or the Mercedes SLS, it’s actually not that bad. It’s certainly got better with age – Lambo keeps upgrading the software as the lifecycle continues. I’ve spent plenty of time cursing at e-gear boxes over the years, so I’m happy to report that the engineers have finally got it right.

When the road is clear and you’ve prepared your passenger for the onslaught that’s coming their way you can absolutely rip through the gears – each one smacking home extremely hard. It’s a wonder how the gearbox puts up with it at all, as the sheer forces at play are just immense.

Wind the V10 close to 8000rpm, a quick pull on the small lever on the right of the wheel and – bang! – the next gear is engaged. Some people might say that the Gallardo isn’t a proper balls-out Lamborghini, but I can guarantee you that those people haven’t experienced one first hand. This is still one hell of a hardcore machine.

Along with the extra power and lighter weight, Lamborghini also decided to stiffen up the suspension a bit – though I’m not entirely convinced of the results. Along a slightly bumpy off-camber stretch of road, the Superleggera bucks and jigs around without any real sense of composure. I’m not asking for Audi-like levels of comfort, but I never had any complaints with the regular LP560-4 Gallardo, so why did Lambo feel it had to mess with a formula that worked so well?
