The 265 horses from the 3.5L V6 are transmitted smoothly by the electronically controlled CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and although there is perhaps a lack of urgency in power delivery I reminded myself that this was a seven-seat luxury car and not a sports coupé. Highway speeds though are reached effortlessly, and with minimal engine or road noise present, you really do appreciate the refinement that the JX35 exudes. Luxury comes at a cost though, and in the JX, feel for the road can be a bit vague at times thanks to the over-assist power steering.

Still, on the tighter roads towards Meydan, which was our next stop, it was time to see how it handled the corners. There is some noticeable body roll but a lot less than you would expect from such a tall car, and following the convoy into a U-turn revealed a tighter turning circle than the JX35‘s near five-metre length would suggest. Good as time as any to check out the Sport Mode. Now, I realize that the JX is not really the type of car you will be taking for a hoon along the back roads after dropping the kids off at school, but rotating that drive mode dial did add a little more dynamism to the steering. Result!

Coffee consumption took priority at Meydan after which we made our way to the underground car park for the technology and safety demonstration. I jumped into the spacious second row seating to witness the new Parking Assist feature which aids parallel parking by overlaying JX-sized grids on the 360º bird’s eye view display and recommends position and steering angle. Although it does take some time to set up this function, it is an obvious benefit to the ‘parallel parking impaired’ and especially so with such a long vehicle.

I am, however, not a fan off technology overriding human input. This probably stems from a belief that it will end up in a messy complication of Terminators, time travel and the fight for survival of our species. The Backup Collision Intervention System in the JX is one such feature. While reversing, if the system detects a crossing vehicle or object and the driver fails to take action it pushes the accelerator pedal back towards the driver’s foot while simultaneously applying the brake. It is a very effective system and it does have obvious benefits when reversing a large vehicle like the JX but I sometimes worry that that these new technologies override the responsibility of driver awareness and end up being depended on rather than as an additional safety feature. I also worry about Terminators.

The final leg of our journey was the short drive between Meydan and the XVA Art Gallery where we would be having lunch. The drive was pleasantly uneventful and we simply relaxed into the abundant luxury and comfort that the JX35 had to offer. Greeting us at the XVA was an exhibition of Infiniti and Infiniti-sponsored Red Bull Racing objets d’art, including a piece that once contained the actual head of Sebastian Vettel. As I sank back my first Shirley Temple cocktail, I pondered what Infiniti have achieved with the JX35.
