Welcome back to my driver’s blog for the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series 2011. It hasn’t been too long since I did my first blog but a lot has happened in the last few weeks. So after a solid first weekend in Adelaide, where we sat 12th in the championship, I was out to get a couple more top 10’s under my belt.

With only one test day used so far this year, we thought it would be good to get to work on some set up changes before the next race in Perth. The test day went really well and the team and I got through a long list of possible changes to try out and after 130 laps we had it all done.

Another good thing about the long test day was getting used to the heat again after a long break after Adelaide. Perth was set to be around the same temperature 30 Degrees +, so it was great to have a trouble free day and get more time in the car.

Just after the test I was lucky enough to get the support from Mad-Croc Energy Drinks and G4S, so the week before the race in Perth was pretty busy getting stickers all made up for the car. For those of you that are unaware Mad Croc is designed to give you energy when you need it and help you accomplish whatever it is that appears monumental. Maybe that’s cleaning up after a not so little party. Or maybe it’s working late cleaning up in aisle six when everyone else is headed for happy hour. We only had time for a basic design but even that got us a lot of coverage from the local media, including a feature on Channel 7 which is going to be on the V8 Supercar weekly program.

So we arrived in Perth on the Thursday and spent most of the day setting up and getting ready for the race weekend. I was able to have a walk around the track with Matt and get a good look and see where I could and couldn’t use. One challenge from coming over from Abu Dhabi was I have never been on any of these tracks before and Perth was no exception.

I had two practice sessions to get used to the track and get ready for qualifying, which was on Saturday morning. The track has quite a short lap time, only 58 seconds, but the elevation change made it very challenging and a really good track to drive. After the second practice I was in P12 and I was near the top ten goal I set for myself before the race weekend. On Saturday morning I had qualifying.

Every weekend I have two sets of new tires to use, so I have two runs to get a good lap in. The first run was good and I was sitting in 11th place, the top ten was very close on time and only a couple tenths of a second separated five cars. On the second run I had a good lap and lowered my time by .2, which was good enough to get up to P9. I was happy with qualifying and was really looking forward to the race. During practice we had been working on our race pace, so I was pretty confident we had really good speed.

Saturday Race One: The start of the first race didn’t go exactly to plan. I had some problems with the dash on the start line so I got way too much wheel spin. I lost three places going into the first corner and at turn 6 I ran wide over the rubber marbles and went across the gravel and came back onto the track in P24 and last place. After I cleaned the tyres and got back up to speed, I settled down and started to put in some fast lap times to catch the guys in front of me. After a few laps and one safety car, I was back up to P12 and catching the guys in front at a pretty good rate.

After some great overtaking moves, which I was pretty proud of, I was back up to P9.  Rather excitedly I finished the race in P9, so after a bad start and some really good pace, I got another top 10 finish. Result.

Sunday Race Two: I started race two from P9 and after another problem with the dash I lost 3 places at the start. But unlike the first race I was able to keep in on the track and start passing people to make the places back up. It was a really competitive race with all the guys around me on nearly the same lap times, so making up any ground would be tough. I was able to look after my tires really well and also using the roll bars in the car gave me good speed in the last part of the race.

With just five laps to go I was behind Tim Blanchard (who finished 2nd in the championship the year before) and was looking for an opportunity to pass him. I got passed with a very tight move on the inside into turn 1. After that I held my position until the end of the race and finished in P8. So after the two races I was in P7 for the weekend, right where I had set my targets.

It was great to have such good pace in both races and finish strong in both, which shows I can look after the tires and still have good pace at the start of the race as well. With the new support from Mad-Croc, G4S, Ethos DPS and all the coverage and support we got on the weekend, it turned out to be a great race and really set the team up for a great year.

A big thank you has to go out to the team Matt Stone Racing for another great weekend which went buy with no mechanical problems what so ever, so thank you to all the guys who helped.  So for now I am going to be training hard for the next race in Townsville in seven weeks.
