The latest car manufacturer to dip their toes into the Formula 1 waters is Infiniti. Well, sort of. Don’t expect to see an Infiniti team in this month’s season opening race in Melbourne, but you will see the Japanese manufacturer’s name adorning the Red Bull cars as a major sponsor.

There had been speculation that the Infiniti name would be used for the world champions’ Renault-built engines, as Infiniti is owned by Nissan, which is a partner firm of the French manufacturer. However, Red Bull has settled on splashing the Infiniti name over Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber’s RB7, while the company will also work with Renault “to forge future technical collaboration with Red Bull”.

Infiniti wants to use F1 to broaden its image as it looks to expand both its profile and its product range. Whether that means we’ll see some sort of F1-inspired special editions of future Infiniti cars is yet to be seen. We’re hoping for a QX56 with a huge rear wing.
