The London Project to Cure Blindness and Moorfields Eye Charity are proud to have been selected by a new Dubai-based Le Mans racing team, Storholm Racing, to appear on their car in lieu of a corporate sponsor, during the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.

This generous philanthropic gesture by Storholm Racing means that the Moorfields Eye Charity and London Project messages will now travel at incredible speeds around Silverstone race track in the UK in September 2011 and the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in Georgia, USA a month later.

The London Project is a collaboration between Professor Pete Coffey from University College London and Dr Lyndon da Cruz, a retinal surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital. The aim is to combine cutting edge knowledge and technology from the laboratory, clinic and
operating theatre in order to accelerate the development of new treatments for age related macular degeneration. The techniques under development aim to provide a cure for the most common cause of blindness.

Charitable funds have been vital to Moorfields’ Eye Hospital since it opened in 1805. Today, this charitable support helps us to finance cutting edge research into the major causes of blindness and it enables us to develop new treatments. Moorfields Eye Charity
provides the focal point for all hospital-led fundraising activity and will support and promote the work of Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Dr Lyndon da Cruz said of the collaboration: “What could be more pertinent than all the colour, action and excitement of a famous car race to remind us how lucky we are to have the gift of vision? Storholm have put financial gain aside to spread the message about eye
care and the ongoing innovative work being conducted to help protect one of our greatest gifts.”

Not only is the team Principal, Mr. Knut Storholm based in Dubai, the three drivers who will be competing against the best drivers in the world (including current and past Formula One drivers) all live in Dubai. Jordan Grogor, Bassam Kronfli and Aldous Mitchell all compete
regularly in the Gulf Radical Cup, amongst other series. The team is also supported by local Dubai tailor Logsdail London and the car will proudly wear ‘Fly Emirates’ and ‘Fly High Dubai’ in recognition of the team’s UAE roots.

The team plans to compete for the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup in 2012, including the famous 24 hours of Le Mans race in France.
