“I don’t know the specific term, but FQ apparently stands for ‘f***ing quick!’.

“You can’t drive a car like this sensibly. You need to thrash it! The steering is amazing, because it’s so sharp: wherever you point nose, that where the car goes. And it goes unbelievably well! Really. I’ve read about it of course, but I never knew the Evo would be so sharp!”

Even though there’s only 20,000km on the clock (2000km of which are down to Fayyaz), the Evo X is not just rolled out with the good silverware on special occasions. Despite a fairly modest fuel economy (“if it does 300km then I’m happy”), Fayyaz uses the Mitsubishi everyday on the daily commute, and takes great delight taking wife Manal and daughter Aaminah on the road during the weekends. Far from being a boy’s toy, the Lancer Evo X is very much the family car.

“The front bucket seats are a bit harsh, but my family can travel in it perfectly comfortably and really enjoy going out in it. That makes a big difference, the fact that they can share the experience and can get just as excited about it as me.”

Twenty years after the Mitsubishi Evo range first hit the streets, its reputation is still as strong as ever. And Fayyaz for one knows he’s made the right choice.

“I’ve driven the VIII and IX models, and in those you get a raw feeling from the ride: you feel the road; you feel the power. In the Evo X, you still feel that the car is asking for more, but still it’s a…it’s a pet beast! Mitsubishi has refined it, and tamed it! And I’ve taken great care to look after it. I feel very lucky.”
