Our regular visitors will know that we have something for the salt flats here at crankandpiston. There is something about the expanse, the space. the sheer epicness of what is out there that just makes us giddy and drives a personal desire to get out there and give it a shot ourselves.

One team that clearly feels the same and has been pushing the boundaries over the last couple of years is Spectre. The team, who this year have been on the hunt for the magical 400mph in a four-wheel, petrol powered wagon during the Speed Week just past. To push their streamliner to this magical figure, the team used a turbo charged 529 cubic-inch Cadillac V8 with over 2,000 horsepower. This might sound a bit extreme on the face of it, but needs must.

Sadly the 400 mph club was not joined, however the team nailed three records and clipped 366 mph in the process of gunning for it.

So what does it feel like to do those sort of speeds with your bum scraping along the ground? Thankfully the team had a videographer along for the ride…

Press play – Turn it up and enjoy!

p.s I know there are Salt Flat in Qatar – Time to get the travel bag out and throw it in the back of a muscle car!
