“You have to spend a lot of time smoothing the edges and making sure everything is aligned properly. There are a lot of problems during the process: sometimes there’s something missing, sometimes there’s gaps. Then we do a final product, one last time when all the bugs are fixed, and that’s the final kit that’s installed on the car. There are no mistakes or errors on that.”

It is only at this point that the final assembly can begin. Working in this linear fashion takes time granted, but months of hardwork could easily be thrown away if the original design harbours a mistake. And with customer interest increasing day-by-day, the Chrome & Carbon powers-that-be are not prepared to take that risk. Even rolling the finished car out of the garage requires care.

“The drive is absolutely fine, but the parts are made of fiberglass so you do need to be a bit careful on the open road. Customers sometimes forget that the car is lower than before and don’t always watch out for speed bumps! We do advise that customers upgrade the engine since the body kit can add a bit of weight. We can send the car to one of our technical partners but it’s not something we do on-site here.”

Of course this work doesn’t come cheap, with prices for a full Chrome & Carbon overhaul hitting the $20,000 mark. Yet the knowledge that European and American counterparts can charge up to twice this amount does lend some perspective.

In truth, so too does the size of the operation. In 2007, Chrome & Carbon housed a 10-strong crew in a single workshop. Five years later, the company’s extended premises house nearer a 30-strong outfit during the busier periods. By the team’s own admission, effective management of concescutive projects has improved dramatically as the company has grown.

We do our best to stay out of the way and not trip over anything. Just to the side of us, there’s over half a dozen car-shaped dust sheets, so the team’s certainly got its work cut out for the next few months. The temptation to take a peak is overwhelming…

…but of course, we wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise.
