The humble electric car is on a bit of a charge at the moment. Nissan’s already thrown its hat into the ring with the LEAF and Telsa has done great things with a Lotus Elise and a box of electrics.

Now BMW are stepping up to the mark with two all-new models set to reach production in the not too distant future. The first is the i3 – based on the underpinnings of the 1-Series Coupe, this urban-centric car promises to crack 100kph in less than 8 seconds whilst emitting zero emissions.

But the real interest for us is the BMW i8. This plug-in hybrid sports car features carbon-fibre construction and will reach 100kpg in less than 5 secs whilst using just 3 litres of petrol every 100kms. Those figures are seriously impressive, it’s just a shame we’ll have to wait until 2014 to try it for ourselves.
