There’s some clever technology akin to noise cancelling headphones incorporated into the S6 that means when the throttle is only getting a light depression, ambient noise is counteracted. The result is a really quiet cruise on a chassis that’s been stiffened for the S range but remains beautifully damped.

The major change for this generation of S6 is the V8 engine, which replaces the V10 found in previous models. All being well, this will mean less heavy weight and understeer at the front of the car, thanks to the smaller displacement. On fast flowing roads, things are definitely positive. Maximum torque is available from just 1400rpm, which means it delivers a swell of grunt almost immediately, without a hint of turbo lag. And the power keeps coming. In these days where 500bhp seems a bare minimum for a performance car, 414bhp barely raises an eyebrow.

But make no mistake – the S6 is rapid in a straight line. Off the line it’s immediately making a beeline for the distant horizon and there’s huge reserves of pull in the mid-range. The gearbox is excellent – silky smooth and super-fast, especially with the car set to Dynamic mode. Now that the throttle is getting more of a workout there’s a distant V8 grumble from the back, just enough to let you know the potential under the bonnet.

It’s only when the corners get tighter that things unravel slightly. At 1895kg the S6 is a weighty beast, and it can’t hide that momentum. Try to push on and the front tyres will protest surprisingly early, and progress is limited to frustratingly slow turns and then a smash of the right foot, using the power and traction to keep going at pace.

This is a resolutely understeery car – even flicks and mid-corner lifts refused to bring the back end into play, and it gets wearing after a while. That said, the brakes are good and the steering pleasantly hefty. But having to scrub off so much speed into the bends and then wait an achingly long time to be able to get back on the power ruins the flow of a fast drive.

This is a shame, but treat the Audi S6 as a meaty cruiser and it excels. Very little can match its interior quality and it’ll cover hundreds of kilometres in a quiet, refined manner. It’s got the grunt to keep up with most other things on the road. Just as long as there aren’t too many corners involved.
